All the Worlds a Stage

In this project, my aim was to make a series of still-life images representing the plays of William Shakespeare through modern visual interpretation. My interest in Shakespeare stems from the way in which, even centuries after his death, he remains our most celebrated playwriter and poet. I was intrigued by the idea that his plays continue to be performed worldwide, and his plots and characters continue to influence contemporary culture. Focusing on five particular plays –Hamlet, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream– I have tried to represent each of the plays by assembling objects that symbolise them. For me, the themes of love, loss, madness, innocence and fantasy hold a particular significance and have relevance in the present day. It is these aspects of human life, our psychology and our social circumstance that Shakespeare could grasp so intensely in his plays, that made me want to create these images by using objects as representations.
